The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 (FSS Act). This government agency is in charge of managing Indian food companies and ensuring that they adhere to government regulations. It is their responsibility to ensure that the food is not tainted and meets the required standards.

Also, it is their responsibility to get rid of bad food. In India, this organization is in charge of registering and licensing commercial food or FBO operators.

It has also established rules and regulations for doing business in India. The following are the different types of FSSAI licenses:

Basic Registration

Issued by the State Government, this license is given to small distributors, marketers, transporters, storage units and manufacturers. It is issued for a period of a maximum of five years or a minimum of one year. The companies possessing this license have a yearly turnover of INR 12 lakh.

State License

This license is given to small and medium enterprises such as marketers, distributors, transporters, storage houses and transports etc. It is also issued by the state government. The company must have limited their operations to only one state. The companies having this license have a yearly income of more than INR 12 lakh. It is issued for a period of minimum one year and a maximum of five years.

Central License

This license is given to companies that have an export-oriented business or are importers in the food business. They may include ports or airports, operators of central government agencies, large scale manufacturers, etc. They need to have central licenses that are issued by FSSAI. 

These licenses are issued by the Central Government. This license is required for the head office of a company in case if it operates in different cities and states. This license if for a food business operator (FBO) whose yearly turnover is INR 20 Crore. It is also issued for five years and at least one year.

Therefore, all Food Business Operators need to have food licenses or FSSAI licenses. It lays down the standard for the food industry. In addition, it regulates the import and sales of food articles, their distribution, storage and manufacturing to ensure the availability of wholesome and safe food for people living in the country. FSSAI is responsible for creating an information network and spreading awareness across the country. They ensure that the public receives accurate information, reliable and rapid information regarding food-related issues, hygiene and food safety. Documents required for FSSAI license registration

These are the documents that are required to register for an FSSAI license-

  • Water test report
  • Import Export code
  • MoA and AoA (Memorandum of association and Article of association describing the powers and objects of the company)
  • NOC from Municipality  
  • Passport size photograph
  • Details of all equipment
  • Layout plan
  • A list containing food category
  • Identity proof and
  • Address proof.

You will also need many additional documents along with these, such as Forms B and IX, processing unit complete plan, list of directors, food category manufactured in the company, contact details and ids of directors and letter from the manufacturer. In addition, information about the source of food materials, Certificates from the ministry of commerce, the ministry of tourism and the safety management system. NOC from the manufacturer, a document issued by DGFT, proof of ownership and partnership deeds are also needed.
